Dear Members and Friends of PFHA,

Whether you are a long-time member of PFHA or visiting with us for the first time—I bid you WELCOME to our Association and to the “world’s smoothest riding horse”—the Paso Fino.

This has been a tremendous year at PFHA and, as we near the end of 2017, we pause to reflect on the triumphs and the challenges we faced.  Determination was the watchword for our Grand National Championship Show as multiple storms raced across Florida, the Southeast, and Texas.  PFHA members rallied to find electricity, water, and food for their horses while, at the same time, reaching out a helping hand to others in hard-hit places like Puerto Rico.

Despite these challenges, we at PFHA recognize that we have much to be thankful for.  We have a fantastic breed, the Paso Fino, which continues to capture the joy and imagination of riders in every area—pleasure, recreational, show, entertainment, and clinics, to name a few.  We are thankful for the many opportunities to introduce the public to our Paso Finos in fairs, equine exhibitions, multi-breed competitions and more.  Please go to the “find a Paso Farm” on this website to locate the one nearest you—and give them a call!  Our members never miss an opportunity to introduce someone new to their Paso Finos!

To our Members, my thanks and very best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Joyous New Year.  To you who are visiting our site, I recommend adding a Paso Fino to your Christmas list and, if Santa can’t bring one—make it your New Year’s resolution to visit one of our great farms and get acquainted!

Trail Horse Test Program Enriched through USEF Membership Incentive Grant

The Paso Fino Horse Association’s Recreational Rider program rolled out its Trail Horse Test Program in 2017. The program provides a way to demonstrate the horse’s ability to perform trail riding skills based upon a series of tests that gauges the horse’s natural ability and training against a standard of performance. Awards for the program include patches, bridle tags, halters, and saddle pads with embroidery work that demarcates the horse’s level.

Thank you to the United States Equestrian Federation for the Membership Incentive Grant that supported the institution of this program.

PFHA Youth Seminars

The PFHA Youth Committee is ecstatic to have Master Farrier O’Neill Garcia at Team USA tryouts in South Carolina & Florida. He will be part of our ongoing PFHA YOUTH SEMINARS where our Youth can develop a better understanding of why overall Horse Care is imperative for their horse(s).

O’Neill Garcia resume includes:
– Garcia graduated from Oklahoma’s Horseshoeing School in 1991
– In 1997 Garcia was a teacher for two years in the same school
– Garcia is part of the AFA Association. In February of 2016, he became an Equine Podiatry receiving certification in Bilbao Spain in a BF Academy.

As these youth riders are the future trainers, owners, judges, etc. of our great breed, any future education is imperative for PFHA.

Thanks to the United States Equestrian Federation for the grant money provided we are able to further the PFHA Youth’s education on how important overall equine health is to their horse(s).

Welcome to the New PFHA Website

This vibrant, eye-catching Association site is designed to provide information not only to our Members, but also to Visitors seeking to find out more about our Paso Fino horse and our Association.

The Computer Committee and the good folks at Millermark Creations did a great job of capturing the look and flavor of the Association. I draw your attention to a couple of new items on the site: Find a Farm and Find a Show. These are maps where
every farm can be quickly located, along with pertinent information about the farm. I want every Member farm reflected on the map (it’s FREE). On the second map, Find a Show, you will be able to find every sanctioned show as well as many
of the events where Members demonstrate our Paso Finos.

The good folks at CNTi are working on revising the Member Only section of the website and expect to roll that out early in 2018. Meanwhile, the PFHA website is here for Members to use. Please continue to send in stories, pictures, farm and
horse information, etc. and we will get it posted!

As always, we value your comments and suggestions. Please let us know where we can improve.

PFHA/NATRC Breed Award Winner

Eduardo el Negrito Knight, owned by Diane Wingle, Franktown, CO, 136 points

My name is Eduardo el Negrito Knight and I live in Colorado. I have had quite the life with my mom, Diane Wingle. I picked her as my mom when I was four years old, and I’m turning 20 next month. Diane taught me everything I know and I continue to learn new things because, if the truth be known, I work for treats!

We compete in competitive trail riding under North American Competitive Trail Ride Conference (NATRC; www.nactr.org). I like it because we are judged on horse and horsemanship (I usually beat my mom in placings) and we must finish within a 30 minute window, so it’s not like we have to be first across the finish line to win. NATRC is much, much more than that. Horses are judged on trail ability and manners, conditioning, and soundness. We compete in two-day events although one-day events are offered.

Our 2017 ride season started in April and ended in November. We ended up competing in twelve rides in the states of New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. NATRC has regional and national awards that we won. In our region, both my mom and I took first place in Competitive Pleasure (CP) horse and horsemanship, but I won the Land of Enchantment’s Best Trail Horse in New Mexico award for the first time. On the national level, my mom and I won first place regional team award, I won first place High Point CP Horse (my mom took 2nd in High Point Horsemanship), earned my National Champion Horse award for the 2nd year in a row, came in 3rd place honorable mention for Grand Championship High Average Horse (my mom won it in Horsemanship though), and I won High Point Paso Fino of the Year!

All those awards are nice but because of NATRC, my mom learned how to take care of me on the trail, made me a better horse, made her a better rider, not to mention the fantastic friendships. I highly recommend you attend a NATRC clinic and a competition. I am one of the luckiest horses out there because I love my job!

Mindy Ashley is an amateur owner and rider who fell in love with the Paso Fino Breed after rescuing her first Paso Fino mare four years ago. Upon nursing her mare back to health she took her to a trainer and started taking lessons so that she could trail ride. But after a few visits to the trainer she started seeing show horses that the trainer was also training. One training session he asked if she would like to ride a fino gelding and the rest is history. Four years and eight horses later, MIndy and her husband David formed Rio Nuevo Paso Fino farm located in the beautiful mountain town of Fleetwood NC. Jose (Chelo) Gonzalez came to the farm Feb 2017 as resident trainer. Last year at the Nationals Mindy got reserve in the 4 year old pleasure colt class on her beloved Curioso De Seminole.. This year she has shown and won at several shows, the most recent being the Heritage
show in Springfield ,Ohio were she won first place in her class and championship both days on her stallion Curioso. Besides the farm Mindy has been a realtor for 15 years and also owns an upscale ladies boutique called The Bellhops Boutique in the tourist town of West Jefferson ,NC. The mother of two adult children and mimi to her 8 year old grandson Kane, which many of you have probably seen at the shows with her. Mindy hopes that next year she and her grandson will be showing together. Mindy says that it is never too late to do what you love and hopes to keep growing her farm. Rio Nuevo offers training, boarding, breeding and sales. She says the Paso Fino family have welcomed her with open arms, and she is blessed to be a part of this magnificent breed.
