PFHA Region – California

Region Bylaws:
Area: California, Nevada, Hawaii, Central America

The California Region, with members in Arizona and other western states, promotes the Paso Fino breed with fun and pointed shows, trail rides, clinics, informational outreach at horse events and through our Parade and Exhibition group, Hollywood Paso Finos. California has such a long history with Paso Finos that thousands of horses are not registered, since many came here in the 1960’s without an association. In addition to supporting our current members another of our tasks is to locate and educate those who own Paso Finos and don’t know about the horses, or the PFHA.

CPFHA is known for our camaraderie, our beautiful show venues and our many parks, mountains, beaches and open spaces that integrate trails and equestrian sports into both rural and urban life. This is probably the most horse friendly state in the union and the potential market here is huge and relatively untapped. Our work promoting our beautiful breed has made inroads into CA horse culture. More people recognize and admire Paso Finos than ever before.

Above all we respond to the needs of our members. Currently we are promoting less expensive, local shows, clinics and rides to engage members, attract non-members and build our community. Our support of Paso Finos includes participation in the Grand National Show. Many Grand National and World Champions have come from the California Region. Because our participation in the National show increases when it is closer we supported the move west. This is also an important way to reach out and promote the breed throughout the country. To increase our members’ support we plan to co-ordinate dates and locations for the Grand Nationals, and the new show in Colorado.

The California Paso Fino Horse Association was born when Herb and Suzy Sutton visited their friends, Ray & Winona Walton at Flint Oak Ranch, back east. and became captivated by their Paso Finos. With the help of Charles Minter Sr., Rosalie MacWilliam, and George LaHood, the Suttons acquired a fine collection of Paso Fino champions including PFHA Foundation Sires Mar de Plata LaCE (PFHA registration #1) and Bolero LaCE (PFHA registration #2) and moved them to 230 acre Rancho Paso Bravo in Aqua Dulce, CA. It was here, in 1982, that the Suttons, the Minters, MacWilliams, Vickie McQuinn, Johnny Lanier, Karen Kline and Joe Neri, formed the California PFOBA, now called the CPFHA.

Over the years we have shown our Pasos all over our region-including Palm Springs (Indio), Monterey, Del Mar, Santa Barbara, Sacramento, Ventura, Reno, plus others like Scottsdale Arizona, and Los Vegas, Nevada. We’ve held exhibitions and demos at festivals, State Fairs and horse conventions. Our parade group, the Hollywood Paso Finos has reached world wide audiences on TV in the The Hollywood Christmas Parade and The Tournament of Roses Parade. CPFHA members participated in the Rose Parade in 1987, 1993, 1996 and 2009 and was seen by over a million spectators in Pasadena, and 100 million US TV viewers and millions more world-wide. In the 1996 Rose Parade, Hollywood director Martha Coolidge (“Out to Sea”, “Rambling Rose”, “The Prince & Me”) showed the world a 400 year history of the Paso Fino in costume that began with Queen Isabella, Christopher Columbus, and the Conquistadors. In 2009 she created a musical horse act with movie and Broadway star Obba Babatunde,(“The Manchirian Candidate”, “The “Notebook” and “Dream Girls”) playing Zorro using dancers, stunt men and champion Paso Finos, that aired on RFTV in the Rose Parade’s Equifest, prior to the parade.
